Transforming a Historic Golf Club House into a Modern Family Home

Project Overview

Originally the  clubhouse for Caldy Golf Club which was converted into a home in the 1960s, this unique property held a special history that our clients wanted to refresh and modernize. Working closely with them, we designed a light-filled, contemporary space that balances functionality and aesthetics, creating a perfect blend of past and present. The house still contains a part of the original bar which has been retained and is used for parties and entertaining.

Creating an Open-Plan Heart of the Home

Our design reimagined the kitchen and main living area, relocating the kitchen to create a central, open-plan space ideal for family life and entertaining. This layout enhances flow and maximizes natural light, making it a true heart of the home. It link directly to the garden through large sliding doors and provides a sheltered space under the balcony above.

The Feature Staircase: A Fusion of Craftsmanship and Style

One of the home’s most striking additions is a bespoke staircase crafted with thick oak treads over a thin steel structure, paired with frameless glass balustrades. This staircase not only connects to the home’s upper level but also serves as a design statement, blending modern elegance with timeless materials. The combination of warm oak, sleek steel, and clear glass creates a stunning visual contrast, making the stairwell a focal point visible from various angles within the open-plan space. The frameless glass balustrades allow light to flow through the stair area, enhancing the home’s bright, airy atmosphere.

Expanding the Upper Floor with a Luxurious Master Suite and Balcony

The home’s upper floor, initially a small, sloping-ceilinged bedroom, was completely transformed. With planning approval, we removed part of the roof and expanded the space to create a master suite featuring a large bedroom, private lounge, spacious bathroom, and a large balcony. This balcony offers stunning views of the Caldy golf course and the Dee Estuary beyond, making it an idyllic spot for relaxation with a view. Large glass doors seamlessly connect the suite to the outdoors, inviting natural light while framing the landscape beyond.

A Contemporary Exterior with Character

The entire house was re-rendered to match the upgraded aesthetic, with the rear upper level clad in durable zinc and natural cedar. This blend of materials brings a warm, modern touch to the exterior, while the front facade features a unique sloping glass wall that extends up the wall and across the roofline, providing a striking architectural feature and flooding the interior stair well with light.

Welcoming Entryway Redesign

The original entrance was always lost in the front elevation so we crafted a taller, inviting space with a rooflight, clad in zinc on the outside and finished with cedar on the inside, creating a bright and airy feel as soon as you enter and  complements the overall design language of the home.

A Modern Home with Uninterrupted Golf Course and Sea Views

Through careful design and planning, this former clubhouse is now a modern family home with a luxurious, private master suite and a balcony overlooking the scenic golf course. This blend of historical character and contemporary comfort has resulted in a warm, welcoming, and visually engaging space for our clients.
